Joint Research Centre

JRC logoThe Joint Research Centre is a Directorate General of the European Commission (DG JRC). The mission of the Joint Research Centre is to provide customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of European Union policies. As a service of the European Commission, the Joint Research Centre functions as a reference centre of science and technology for the Union. Close to the policy-making process, it serves the common interest of the Member States, while being independent of special interests, whether private or national. The AGRI4CASTS Action of the Monitoring Agricultural Resources (MARS) Unit contributes in improving the Community's statistical tool for managing and monitoring the Common Agriculture Policy. AGRI4CASTS has been developing and operationally running a Crop Forecasting System since 1992 in order to provide timely crop production forecasts at European level. This system is able to monitor crop vegetation growth and include the short-term effects of meteorological events on crop productions and to provide yearly forecasts on European crop predictions. On going actions concern the development of tools for agrometeorlogy and biophysical modelling based on the component-oriented paradigm. Agrometeorological data, software applications and reusable components are made available to third parties.

Relevant experience

  • SEAMLESS - System for environmental and agricultural modelling: Linking European science and society. The SEAMLESS integrated project develops a computerized framework (SEAMLESS-IF) to assess and compare, ex-ante, alternative agricultural and environmental policy options. AGRI4CAST has lead in partnership to CRA the development of the APES framework, a modular system for estimating agricultural production and externalities ( AGRI4CAST and CRA have defined the requirements and developed the software Architecture of tools and components, also developing in house (.NET platform) several tools and components.
  • ENSEMBLE - The overall goal of ENSEMBLES is to maintain and extend European pre-eminence in the provision of policy relevant information on climate and climate change and its interactions with society. The role of AGRI4CAST has been the use of climatic scenarios made available within the project to make estimates of climate change impact on crop yields, and to develop adaptation scenarios. The implementation of alternate weather data grids as resulting from Global Circulation Models is on going.
  • CGMS - The Crop Growth and Monitoring System is an infrastructure of biophysisical and statical tools and models which allows maintaining a grid of daily data covering the whole Europe, and some part of Asia. Weather data are made available, as well as a set of applications and reusable components.

Role in the consortium

AGRI4CAST will provide and operate validation scenario 2, consisting in developing machine-readable pages for making available biophysical models and domain specific data-types in:

  • WP5: Validation Scenarios

Its role is to provide the domain- specific knowledge for the use case, and to contribute in defining the requirements for some TaToo tools.
